Caption: Ben Roy Mottelson (born 1926), US-born Danish nuclear physicist, backpacking in the Scottish Highlands. Mottleson studied at Purdue University, and then Harvard University, receiving his doctorate in 1950. He spent most of his career in Copenhagen, Denmark, working at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (later renamed the Niels Bohr Institute). Mottleson worked with Niels Bohr's son Aage Bohr on comparing theories and geometries of atomic nuclei with experimental results. These theories had been developed by Aage Bohr and James Rainwater. For this work, Rainwater, Bohr and Mottelson were jointly awarded the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physics. Photographed in August 1986.
