Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), which is a health hazard for wild as well as farmed salmonids. Salmon lice are ectoparasites that occur naturally on salmonides (salmon, trout and char) in sea water. When they encounter a suitable host they adhere to the skin, feeding off the mucus and blood. Salmon lice only affect fish and are not harmful towards humans. Magnification: x41 when printed at 10cm wide.
