Caption: Nevada Test Site explosion, 1956. Explosion at Jackass Flats, Nevada, USA, in May 1956. Jackass Flats (also known as Area 25) is part of the larger Nevada Test Site. Nuclear testing was carried out at the Nevada Test Site from 1951, with 928 tests carried out up to 1992. Jackass Flats was a test site for nuclear-powered rocket engines during project Project Rover and NERVA (Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application).
