Caption: Desferrioxamine drug molecule, molecular model. This drug, also known as deferoxamine or desferal, is used to treat acute iron poisoning. Excess iron, often resulting from repeated blood transfusions, builds up in kidney, liver and brain cells and can lead to heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver and diabetes. Desferrioxamine binds to free iron in the blood and facilitates its excretion in the urine. It can also be used to treat excess aluminium levels in the body. In this model, atoms are represented by coloured rods; carbon is yellow, hydrogen is white, oxygen is purple and nitrogen is blue.
