Caption: Refusing streetcar passengers. Streetcar conductor refusing passengers that do not have face masks. In mass transit systems, with crowds of people in close quarters, passengers and drivers were required to wear masks as protection against the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. The pandemic infected one fifth of the world population and killed between 20 and 50 million. Photographed in Seattle, USA, in 1918.
