Caption: Particle detector crystals. Scientist working with crystals for use in the CMS (compact muon solenoid) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. These lead tungstenate crystals, which are more dense than iron, will be used to detect photons, electrons and positrons. The CMS detector will be placed around the LHC (large hadron collider), CERN's highest energy particle accelerator. The main goal of the experiment is to detect the Higgs boson, an elementary particle predicted by the standard model of physics, but yet to be directly detected (as of 2006). A pilot run of the LHC is scheduled for summer 2007.
