This drug, which is marketed as Velcade, is used to treat a type of cancer known as myeloma. Myeloma is a cancer of blood plasma cells found in bone marrow, and can spread to cause multiple cancers in different areas of the body. Bortezomib belongs to a class of drugs, called proteasome inhibitors, that help to prevent the cancers that result from protein breakdowns. Approval was granted in the USA in 2003 and in Europe in 2004.
