Caption: Aphid. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an aphid (order Hemiptera), or greenfly. The compound eyes (orange) can be seen either side of its head. Below its head, between the first pair of legs, is the aphid's tube-like mouthparts (stylets), which it uses to pierce plant stems to suck the sap from the veins inside. Aphids multiply rapidly and are serious pests of flowers, vegetables and some fruit crops. Magnification: x12.5 when printed 10 centimetres high.
