Caption: Strike anywhere match. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of an unburnt match. The head of a match is usually made from paraffin and combustible chemicals, including phosphorous trisulphide, which burns at low temperatures. This is a 'strike anywhere' match. The head contains all the chemicals necessary to light it from frictional heat, unlike a safety match where the oxidizing agent and the combustible body are kept separate. Magnification: x20 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
