Caption: Unmyelinated nerve bundle. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a group of unmylinated nerve fibres. Each fibre is made up of several unmyelinated axons (pale purple) enclosed within a single schwann cell (blue). A ring of perineurial cells surrounds the nerve bundle. Two capillaries (white, upper left and centre right) can also be seen. Unmyelinated nerve fibres lack the concentric myelin sheaths that surround other types of nerve, and which improve the conduction of nerve impulses. Magnification x3000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
