Caption: Common toad. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a young common toad (Bufo bufo), showing one of its large eyes and its warty skin. Adults can grow to 18 centimetres in length and their skin ranges from green to brown. As a defence against predators they secrete a toxic foul-tasting substance called bufagin when threatened. Young common toads eat ants and some small flies. Adults eat invertebrates such as insects, larvae, spiders, slugs and worms, which they catch on their sticky tongues. Magnification: x4 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
