Caption: Ritonavir HIV drug, molecular model. Ritonavir is an antiretroviral drug used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection and AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) symptoms. It is a protease inhibitor as it inhibits the activity of the enzyme protease. Protease an enzyme involved in packaging viral proteins after they have replicated. This inhibition of protease slows, or even halts, the progress of the disease. Ritonavir's chemical formula is C37H48N6O5S2. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (C, grey), hydrogen (H, turquoise), nitrogen (N, blue), oxygen (O, red) and sulphur (S, yellow).
