Caption: Islamic mummy research. Researchers using a drill to obtain a sample from a bone from a mummy excavated at the Al-Fustat archaeological site in Cairo, Egypt. Al-Fustat was the first capital of Egypt under Arab rule. The site contains human remains dating from the time of the Fatimid dynasty, a caliphate of Shi'ite Muslims which was founded in 909 and ruled over a North African empire until 1171. The genetics of the mummies are being studied to help determine the ethnicity and origins of the ruling dynasty. Photographed at the French INSERM research institute.
