Caption: Transgenic rice research. Researcher carrying out a hygromycin-resistance test on leaves of transgenic rice. Hygromycin is a natural antibiotic produced by bacteria. Hygromycin-resistance genes are used to test gene transfer. The leaf on the left is less affected by an infection (yellow area) than the leaf on the right, indicating that the gene transfer has been successful. Transgenic plants are those that have been genetically modified by adding genes from different species. Photographed at the French agricultural research institute, CIRAD, in Montpellier, France.
