A psychoactive drug is a chemical that acts on the central nervous system (CNS) to alter brain function, resulting in temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness and behaviour. It is the most potent naturally-occurring psychoactive compound known. It has long used by the Mazatec shamans of Oaxaca, Mexico but is currently under consideration to be made illegal in the United States.
