Caption: Artificial eye lens, held in a pair of forceps during eye surgery. An artificial lens (also known as an intraocular lens) is implanted into the eye to correct problems with the existing lens. Such conditions include cataracts, as well as refractive problems such as astigmatism, and myopia and hyperopia (short- and long-sightedness). The three protruding structures are used to secure the lens inside the eye.
