Caption: Light microscope footage of the holotrichous ciliate Dileptus sp. The determination of species requires silver impregnation to determine nuclear patterns and the ciliate silver lines. Dileptus ciliates have a conspicuous proboscis carrying a complex ciliary pattern. The ciliates permanently sweep their trunk to get in touch with their prey. Dileptids are predators and have a similar food spectrum as other rapacious ciliates. Specifically, they feed on amoebas, flagellates, ciliates, and even on microscopic metazoans. The oral bulge opening is located at the bottom of the proboscis. Dileptus species have a wide distribution, occurring in freshwater, marine, and terrestrial environments as well as in benthic and planktonic habitats. This sample was taken from a small brook.
