Caption: Single female grey reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) pursued by a gang of males. Only the females are resident on the reefs year round, and have preferences for certain sites. The males disappear for long periods either to deeper colder water or off-shore. When the females become receptive, usually all around the same time, huge numbers of males suddenly appear and chase down the females before biting hold of their pectoral fins and mating. The females are left bitten and scarred, and pregnant. Filmed in Palau.
