Caption: Breeding colonies of Lesser Flamingoes (Phoenicopterus minor) and Greater Flamingoes (Phoenicopterus ruber), rarely seen, on soda flats miles from shore in the middle of Lake Natron, Tanzania. Lake Natron is a soda lake with high levels of sodium carbonate. Flamingoes feed on the cyanobacteria which thrive in this environment and give the flamingoes their pink color.
