Caption: OPAL particle detector. Electromagnetic calorimeter (grey blocks) of the OPAL (omni- purpose apparatus at LEP) particle detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. OPAL was positioned around the large electron-positron (LEP) collider and operated from 1989 to 2000. The electromagnetic calorimeter, which was composed of blocks of lead glass, measured the energies and positions of electrons, positrons and photons after collisions of electrons and positrons.
