Caption: Shiras Moose (Alces alces shirasi) cow feeding on aquatic plants. The Shiras Moose is the smallest of all subspecies of moose. They have bulky bodies with short, stubby tails and a long, oblong head. They are browsers and feed on leaves, twigs, bark, and buds of hardwood and softwood trees and shrubs. In the summer moose feed heavily on aquatic plants such as waterlilies, which are rich in minerals. An adult moose will eat 40 to 60 pounds of food daily. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
