Caption: Herschel Space Observatory construction. Engineers working on the main body of the Herschel Space Observatory. This observatory will carry a 3.5 metre telescope making it the largest of its kind, larger than the Hubble telescope. It was built by the European Space Agency (ESA) and launched in May 2009. It will be used to study the formation of galaxies and stars, and to investigate the composition of the atmosphere of extrasolar planets and interstellar molecular clouds.
