Caption: Sylvia Pankhurst (1882-1960). Portrait of the British suffragette campaigner and activist Estelle Sylvia Pankhurst. Sylvia Pankhurst was the daughter of prominent suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst. She worked for the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) founded by her mother, devising its logo, banners and posters. She founded the East London Federation of the WSPU but had many disagreements with the route the WSPU was taking. Sylvia maintained a secret affiliation with the labour movement and wanted the WSPU to become an explicitly socialist organisation tackling wider issues than women's suffrage and aligned with the Independent Labour Party. Photographed circa 1911.
