Caption: Hepatitis virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). There are five types of hepatitis viruses: hepatitis a, hepatitis b, hepatitis c, hepatitis d and hepatitis e. All of these infect the liver and damage it, but they have different modes of transmission. Hepatitis A and E are usually transmitted via the faecal/oral route, such as through ingestion of faecally contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B, C and D are passed through contact with infected body fluids such as blood.
