Caption: Stroke, post-mortem. Surface of a brain showing an area of dead tissue (infarct, centre) caused by a stroke, or cerebralvascular accident (CVA). The infarct is a result of ischaemia, a lack of blood flow to that area of the brain, caused by a blockage in a blood vessel. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs.
