Caption: Fortification walls of ancient Tiryns. Homer gave the city the epithet "mighty walled Tiryns" and is associated with myths surrounding Heracles, and Proetus who occupied Tiryns and fortified it with the assistance of the cyclopes. Tiryns origins as a hill fort go back seven thousand years, from before the beginning of the Bronze Age and the city went into decline at the end of the Mycenaean period. However, according to Herodotus, Tiryns took part in the Battle of Plataea in 480 BCE with 400 hoplites.
