Caption: Louis Breguet (1804-1883). 1868 illustration of the French physicist and watchmaker Louis-Francois-Clement Breguet. Breguet is best known for his work in the early days of telegraphy, but he also worked on the design of watches, clocks and scientific instruments. In the 1840s, together with Alphonse Foy, he developed an electrical needle telegraph. He did further work on telegraphy in the 1870s and was made a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1874. Breguet is one of the 72 French scientists whose names are written around the base of the Eiffel Tower.
