Caption: Skin fungus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of spore clusters from the fungus Malassezia furfur. This yeast causes tinea versicolor, a skin condition characterised by patches of discolouration, particularly on the chest and back. The fungus usually grows sparsely without causing tinea versicolor, but in some individuals, it grows more actively, resulting in the discoloration. Young adults are affected most often, but it can also affect children and the elderly.
