Caption: Soyuz 9 Soviet spacecraft being prepared for launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. This mission was launched on 1st June 1970 and paved the way for the Salyut space station missions by investigating the long-term effects of weightlessness on the crew, and evaluating what tasks it was possible for cosmonauts to do in orbit. Whilst on this mission the two crew members, Andriyan Grigoryevich Nikolayev and Vitaly Ivanovich Sevastyanov, broke the space endurance record with a flight that lasted nearly 18 days. Photographed on 1st June 1970.
