Caption: Jantar Mantar observatory, Jaipur, India. This is one of a number of astronomical instruments that were constructed between 1724 and 1734 by Maharaja Jai Singh II. The primary purpose of these instruments was to compile astronomical tables, and to predict the times and movements of the sun, moon and planets. This site at Jaipur is one of five constructed by the Maharaja in west central India and is one of the best preserved.
