Caption: Snorkelers and whale shark. Snorkelers swimming with a whale shark (Rhincodon typus). The whale shark is the largest fish in the world and is found in tropical seas, where it reaches an average length of 8 metres. It is a filter-feeder and therefore harmless to humans. It moves slowly through the water using specially adapted gill arches to filter the water, removing anything edible. Its 1.5 metre diameter mouth can circulate up to 6000 litres of water an hour. Photographed in the Indian Ocean, Maldives.
