Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). Mites have needle-like piercing/sucking mouthparts. Spider mites have needle-like piercing/sucking mouthparts. Mites feed by attacking the plant tissue with their mouthparts and sucking cellular fluid. All spider mites spin fine strands of webbing on the host plant. The mites generally feed on the lower surface of the leaves and cause greying and yellowing of the leaves due to mesophyll collapse. Spider mites are the most common mites attacking woody plants and the two-spotted spider mite is considered to be one of the most economically important spider mites. This mite has been reported infesting over 200 species of plants. Magnification: x30 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
