Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Labrys wisconsinensis, Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, capsule forming, budding prosthecate bacterium (prokaryote). Labrys wisconsinensis is a newly identified budding prosthecate bacterium from Lake Michigan. It is the first member of the genus Labrys that is able to grow anaerobically. It is a small rod-shaped bacterium that occurs singly or in pairs. L. wisconsinensis forms large amounts of extracellular mucilage and also is a capsule forming strain. Magnification: x4,000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
