Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Azalea lace bug head, proboscis and delicate clear wings (Stephanitis pyrioides). Azalea lace bug (Stephanitis pyrioides) with delicate clear wings (in the family Tingidae). Stephanitis pyrioides is a destructive pest of azaleas, especially evergreen types. The adult female lays groups of eggs on the under side of the leaf near the main vein. The eggs are partially inserted into the leaf tissue. Injury to the plants is caused by nymphs and adults extracting sap from the leaves. At least 17 species of lace bugs cause damage to ornamental trees and shrubs in the United States. Magnification: x16 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
