Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of White apple leafhopper nymph (Typhlocyba pomaria). The white apple leafhopper nymph is white to pale yellow-green, elongated with rounded head and pointed hind end (usually curved upwards). It is a leaf feeder and does not directly attack the fruit. Leafhopper nymphs and adults insert their piercing and sucking mouthparts into plant cells for food. As sap is sucked from the leaves, green tissue is destroyed causing foliage to become speckled or mottled with white spots. In addition to direct leaf injury, these leafhoppers excrete resin-like material, in deposits called tarspots. Tarspots on the fruit substantially reduce quality and value. Most of the significant fruit spotting is associated with the second generation of white apple leafhopper. Magnification: x13 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
