Caption: Light micrograph of a dendrite in a section of an aluminium-silicon alloy used in die-casting. The inhomogeneous dendrite consists of a dark brown, diamond-shaped core surrounded by several "skins", coloured olive green, light brown, & yellow-white. The skins form side-arms on either side & lobes above & below the central core; they were formed from increasingly depleted variants of the material that formed the core. Once the dendrite was full-grown, the remaining material solidified as the eutectic grey & white structure filling the rest of the field of view. (Polished section, Weck colour etch).
