Caption: Light micrograph of dendrites in an aluminium- silicon-magnesium-iron alloy. Dendritic structures are typical of cast materials, which are solidif- ied from the molten, liquid state in a mold. Solidification is complex & dynamic. Fingers of solid, or primary dendrites, grow within the melt, & they send out secondary & then tertiary arms at specific angles. In this micrograph, the red dendrites are envelopd by a dark blue phase. The material between the dendrites consists of a mainly white aluminium-silicon-iron eutectic & a mainly blue silicon-aluminium eutectic. Magnific- ation: x35 at 35mm size.
