Caption: Solomon's pillars. Tourists visiting Solomon's pillars in the Timna Valley, Negev Desert, Israel. The Timna valley is rich in copper ore. Archaeological evidence shows mining was carried out here from as early as the Late Neolithic Period (about 6ooo BC), and well into the Middle Ages. It was once suggested that the area was mined by King Solomon. This led to the mines being known as Solomon's mines and gave these landforms the name Solomon's pillars. It has since been shown that the mines were not in use during the reign of King Solomon (10th century AD).
