Caption: ExoMars orbiter and rover, illustration. The ExoMars missions started with the launch of the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO, upper left) in 2016. A later launch (scheduled for 2020) will attempt to land the ExoMars rover (foreground) on Mars in March 2021, with results relayed back to Earth by the TGO from its orbit around Mars. In the background at centre left is the surface platform, which will be used to land and deploy the rover, and carry out other science objectives. The ExoMars missions are jointly carried out by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Russia's space agency (Roscosmos). For an illustration of the rover, see image C037/1224.
