Caption: Earth's lithospheric magnetic field. Earth globe projection of magnetic data collected by the Swarm satellites operated by the European Space Agency (ESA). This dataset combines Swarm data with historical data from the German CHAMP satellite. The model used reveals the tiny magnetic signals (measured in hundreds of nanoTesla) produced by Earth's outer layer (the lithosphere: the crust and upper mantle). Red represents areas where the lithospheric magnetic field is positive, while blue show areas where it is negative. Image published in 2017.
