Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of nearly pure (99.8%) alumina, a high-quality technical ceramic used in the manufacture of integrated circuits, biomedical hardware such as hip replacements, and in other products requiring high thermal & chemical resistance. The microstructure of the material is almost completely dense, with some intragranular pores (holes within the grain boundaries) & intergranular pores (holes between grain boundaries). The rough area above centre is a beta-alumina impurity which is present in small quantities. Magnification: x570 at 35mm size. Yellow tint. Original is BW print A630/26M.
