Caption: Leon Brillouin (1889-1969), French physicist. Brillouin's early work was in quantum mechanics, studying the propagation of monochromatic light waves and their interaction with acoustic waves (Brillouin scattering), the propagation of electron waves in a crystal lattice and proposing a method of approximating solutions to the Schrodinger equation. During World War II Brillouin emigrated to the US, where he worked on radar at Columbia University, New York. Later in life he became involved in information theory.
