Caption: Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of pure copper. The micrograph shows the distinct grain structure of this non-ferrous alloy. The orientation of the crystal lattice within each grain has determined the bright mixture of colours seen here. The straight, parallel sets of lines running across the grains are twins. Twinned crystals consist of two or more portions joined together so that one part is a reflection of the other. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size. Microcosmos page 145 Fig. 7.38
