Caption: Light micrograph of a polished section of tungsten carbide binded with a copper filler. Tungsten carbide's extreme hardness and capability of machining hard steels at high speeds renders it of great importance as an industrial cutting tool. Its less desirable brittle properties are overcome through binding with a copper filler. Here, the tungsten carbide particles appear coloured and the copper almost transparent. The high heat conductivity of copper can therefore dissipate the large amounts of heat generated in a tool tip as it cuts. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
