Caption: Light micrograph of a polished section of a silicon/aluminium alloy. The addition of silicon as an alloying element improves aluminium's strength and ease of casting. Cast alloys shrink upon cooling; shrinkage is controlled by selection of the optimum alloy mix. Here, a "Chinese script" dendritic structure has formed, surrounded by pure aluminium. Outside this region is a fine mottled mixture consisting of 11% silicon and 89% aluminium. Nomarski differential interference contrast illumination, magnification: x450 at 35mm size.
