Caption: Fish fossil. Palaeontologist holding a fossil of a Gadocyclus sp. fish. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This specimen, which dates from the Aptian stage (between 125 and 112 million years ago), measures 1 metre in length and was found in Brazil.
