Caption: Mussel and oysters fossil. This fossilised mussel (Mitulus sp.) has several fossilised oysters on its shell. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. This specimen, which dates from the Kimmeridgian stage (between 155 to 150 million years ago), measures 9 centimetres in length and was found in France.
