Caption: Azurite crystals. Azurite is a hydrated copper carbonate mineral. Its name refers to its colour, azure, which is a word used to describe deep blue skies. In medieval times, the mineral was ground up and used by painters as a blue pigment. Azurite's colour also makes it popular with mineral collectors. This sample, found in Morocco, is 6 centimetres long.
