Caption: Gene expression in a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) embryo. All cells contain a complete copy of an organism's genetic information in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). But in each different cell type only certain genes are switched on (expressed), while others remain inactive. Expression is coordinated by gene regulators. This map shows the expression of three gene regulators: Knirps (green), Kruppel (blue) and Giant (red). The more intense the colour the higher the level of expression. The gene regulators are not expressed at all in the black areas.
