Caption: DNA microarray. Artwork of a new technique for reading DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) microarrys by measuring electrostatic repulsion. Microarrays allow thousands of genes to be tested at once. The chip contains sections of single stranded DNA (blue) with known sequences. The DNA to be studied is added to the chip, where it will bind with its complementary sequence (red). The electrostatic method then floods the chip with negatively-charged silica microspheres (grey), which are repulsed by the negatively-charged DNA and so stack up instead of lying flat. The differences can be distinguished by the human eye, in contrast to past methods that use expensive and time-consuming machinery.
